CHAPTER 18

GABRIEL

The sun is low in the sky as we all head back to our house. Roran has Danica wrapped in his arms and tucked into his side protectively, while Daxton holds her hand as the three of them lead the way home. Zane had shown up halfway through practice, and he and Remington are talking in low voices right behind them. They both glance around occasionally, looking for any threat that might try and hurt the ones they love and I roll my eyes while I watch my family laugh and talk together.

I'm not fond of having Moore around, but surprisingly he's formed a friendship with Zander, and I'm not necessarily against it. Zane hardly ever hangs out with anyone other than our family, and he's only been with that bitch Lauren for the last two years. My father has done a real number on my brother, and I'm grateful the Wolf seems to be breaking down the walls Zane’s built over the last three years since we escaped. I, of course, did an in-depth background check on Remington, but besides his involvement with Danica's rescue from her kidnapper last year, he is squeaky clean.

My lips pull down in the corners, and irritation rolls through me at the thought of Joshua Walters. I may not want Danica around me personally, but the knowledge of what he had done to her makes my magic flare to life. I've always had a good grip on my magic, my control almost perfect. At least I did until I saw the purple-eyed girl that day in the cafeteria.

It's been almost wild since.

I push my magic back and wonder who is protecting Walters in jail. It should have been easy to take care of him. A few days after the football game, the Warden called me and said he wasn't going to deliver Joshua as promised, that someone already had eyes on him, and he was under protection. I had cursed him and instructed him to find out who was behind it, but I still haven't received any information. Either the Warden doesn't know or he is being paid to keep silent.

There haven't been any other attacks or contact from Walters that I know of. Danica and Daxton had given me a photograph that had been left taped to her doorway, and I had sent it to a lab to get dusted for prints. But only Danica’s and Kayla’s fingerprints were found on it; whoever had taped it there had been careful.

My phone vibrates in my pocket, and I yank it out. There is only one person that texted me that wasn't currently in my presence and dread slowly crept into my stomach.

Atlas- Dante is moving his team tonight. The target is a foster home on the north side of the city. There's talk about Helen being there; I will email you the file.

Fuck!

I grip my phone tightly as thoughts of the last home Zane and I had been to ran through my mind. We had been too late; we were always too late.
